Challenge:
Read 5 books over the next five months.
Research shows reading plays an important role in your success as a student and in your future. Many of you struggle with reading and are not given the time to practice the skills you need to become a better reader. We are beginning a new initiative in our classroom to help you succeed at reading.
We are challenging you to read 5 books in 5 months! You can select any book of your choice and you will be given 10-15 minutes of class time a day to read with no interruptions. You may have to read outside of class if you are struggling to complete your book during class.
You may bring a book from home, check out a book from the library or borrow from a friend. I also have a few in class you can select from. You may also read on your Kindle or other E-Reader, but phones will not be allowed.
You can select any book on any subject of your choice. I will not monitor your book choice. You are responsible for your book selection. I highly encourage you to discuss your books with your parents or guardians.
This will count as two test grades in the sixth six weeks. Each book you complete will be worth 20 points with a total of 100 points available.
In order to receive credit, you must come in during activity period to complete a book talk over your selected book. I will provide a series of questions for you to discuss during our conversation. You will be asked to provide text evidence to support your conclusions.
Your class will also be competing in a reading challenge competition against the other classes. The class with the highest total of read books will receive a party at the end of the year. I will post class totals once a week on Friday. Do not let your class down!
1 book = 20 pts
2 books = 40 pts
3 books = 60 pts
4 books = 80 pts
5 books = 100 pts
